January Tip of the Month provided by Liz Delaney:
Liz invited Smitty Wiley, Administrator, Emeritus at Ridge Wind, to complete the Artifacts of Culture Change and afterward, they developed 3 tips to share that are examples of the value person-centered care brings to residents at Ridge Wind at the end of life.
- Supporting family at the end of life: staff work to provide a comfortable atmosphere where family members can gather with their loved one. The facility provides education to the family as to what the end of life may look like for their family member. They also make a special effort to create special moments together, such as providing a nice dinner or snacks and drinks while they are visiting.
- Special laundering of bedding: staff launder bedding in lavender which provides a calming effect for the resident. This helps the resident sleep better, calms them, and appears to have a relaxing effect on the family as well.
- Pet therapy: Ellie lives at Ridge Wind and provides comfort to residents. Many times when a resident is near the end of life, Ellie will spend time bedside providing comfort and warmth. Being able to pet Ellie provides a calming effect for the resident and family have praised her ability to comfort their loved one.
