Type of Setting A building constructed or converted for provision of nursing care. A building constructed or converted for provision of assisted living; also a single family residence. Recipient's home (may include senior apartments, assisted living, etc.)
Services Covered in Basic Rate Room and board, nursing care, activities, social services and possibly others. Room; other services (meals, personal and nursing care, etc.) may be included or billed separately. All services billed separately (nursing, therapy, personal care, meals, homemaking, etc.)
Skilled Care Availability All times. No times currently, but limited skilled care in assisted living facilities under HCB Waiver by year 2000. All times (depending on ability to pay).
Dementia Care Availability Most nursing facilities accept residents with dementia, many have special services or units. Some facilities accept people with dementia. Not designed for dementia care - oriented to medical/personal care and at-home support.
Rehabilitation Availability Therapy and rehabilitation services available at all nursing facilities; many specialize in this area. Therapy may be available, but typically not an organized program. Therapy available.
Activities Activities program provided. May be activities program. Not available.
Safety & Environmental Issues Facility must be sprinklered and meet institutional building code, Life Safety Code (if certified), licensure and regulations on environment. If three or more adults, must meet life safety code and have sprinklers. If less than three adults, must meet Uniform Building Code and must have smoke detectors. No environmental requirements - modification of patient's home (special beds, chairs, grab-bars, ramps, handrails, etc.) may be required.
Family Involvement in Caregiving Family can choose level of involvement; all services plus supervision provided by facility. Family can choose level of involvement, supervision of resident usually less than in nursing facility. Typically significant family involvement because home care staff only present at certain times.
Caregiver Supervision 24-hour on-site supervision by facility nurses and administration. Supervision may be less because of apartment style, more independent residents. Generally no on-site supervision of caregiver.
Typical Consumer Elderly individual with unstable medical condition, multiple medical problems, significant dementia, extensive nursing or therapy needs during rehabilitation, family unable to provide care/supervision. Moderately to relatively independent older person with minor to moderate physical disabilities, may have mild dementia, family unable to provide care/supervision. Patient needing relatively short-term nursing or therapy to recover from illness or surgery; older person needing personal care and support who is independent and cognitively aware or has extensive family support
